old things are good

I don’t like the idea that everything has to be new and shiny all the time. Generally, in life, I like old things - old friends, old furniture, old books, old dogs (look at how she’s done the eyes, it stabs me in the heart). Old things are comfortable, friendly, immediately intimate. They feel at home with you, and you with them. Obviously I am also extremely partial to a new puppy, and equally obviously I like shopping for certain sorts of new things. Newness of all kinds can be thrilling.

Usually, though, I prefer old. On TikTok, the young people are currently very taken (81 million views) with the way Jane Birkin used the Hermès bag that was named after her.
