good reading glasses, a poem, a cake recipe, a mending company, a cotton scarf, an old essay about Flaubert, a lampshade, a flower frog, a London restaurant, some earrings and a garden chair

On the basis that this newsletter is all about things I’d tell you about if we knew each other, I’m thinking that sometimes I’ll share recent bookmarks. Is this a good idea? Let me know in the comments. Also this post may be too long for email but, as ever, works on the web and on the app.

Reading glasses and how to choose them

I had my eyes lasered in 2011 (I wrote about it here) and at the time the consultant told me I’d still need reading glasses at some point in my forties, because people just do.

When I first had my eyes done I stared at brick walls for ages. The beauty! The detail!

I’ve made it to 58 without them, but it was time. It turns out publishers aren’t deliberately printing books in aggressively minuscule type to save on paper, plus I’ve started doing that thing with my arm (close, far away, close, far away) when I’m trying to read labels or menus. Aside from anything else, squinting to see makes me open my mouth a little bit and make an involuntary but deeply gormless ‘Uh? What? Whatty?’ face, like when you put on mascara but more extreme - mine suggests not only utter incomprehension but the sort of bewilderment that’s quite close to fear. I could do without making this face twenty times a day. So, specs.
