Things I've liked this week
How to plant a bulb pot, dresses for picnics, amazing cheese, the Dutch Golden Age, a book that should not be judged by its cover, Isabella Rossellini, an auspicious lamp, vegans and restaurants, etc
This week I’m enjoying sticking bulbs in pots and watching them come up. Here’s a guide to bulb pot assembly, for your mum on Sunday or yourself any day. Though it doesn’t need a recipe - just buy any flowering bulbs you like the look of and cram them in your chosen container with a small amount of compost to hoick them up to the right level and some crocks (or a bit of gravel) at the bottom for drainage. That’s it.
The only other thing to know is that taller things, like these nice fat Bridal Crown narcissi, will flop about a bit when they reach peak height, so you might eventually want to put some twigs around the edge of the pot to give them support.
I don’t bother with compost if the container is shallow - I just tip the plants out with what little soil they come with and squish them in, and they’re perfectly happy. Above is one I made earlier, and here’s another one in the kitchen.
