The perfect Sunday morning image!

I absolutely adore your painting posts. I found art history class unbelievably boring and don't remember much of what I learned there but these posts all stay with me. Thank you Prof. Knight.

Gorgeous picture and beautifully expressed

And what has been spilt on the floor by the chair? So lovely and luxurious and confident!

Such beautiful, soft light and exactly what I needed to look at this morning when the weather is so grey and foul outside. I love the shoes lying just where she kicked them off. This woman knows how to enjoy herself. Wonderful!

This morning was so freezing that I wouldn't have traded my slightly fleecy sheets for anything!

This Painting! Truly heaven which means abandon for me, and hope you had tea near you this morning. Only recently learned that English stay in bed for their first and second tea?, but a bun, and a grapefruit half with tea?, hmm for flavors, the delicious comes in the swirling scene with mystery, thank you for your keen writing India!

BTW the post ‘If you see horses…’ !!

It's pure abandon, isn't it it? Glad you liked it.

Something about the immediacy of this reminds me of Tracey Emin's bed - although that really was sordid, like going into your mate's room at uni when they've got a stonking hangover. This is a lot more genteel and elegant, just lovely.

Expand full comment

Yes, you're absolutely right, it's a companion piece to it, isn't it? I LOVE Tracey Emin's bed - I think it's a genius piece of art - but as you say this is far more genteel.

Expand full comment

Yes it is genius! I saw it on a 6th form art trip back in 99 and it's really stayed with me ever since. I'd never seen anything like it. I still think she should have won the Turner Prize that year.

What a beautiful painting….why make the bed when you are probably going to end up back in it very soon……?

(India, I love your writing, “Darling” being one of my favourites. I’ve chosen “Wellness” as our next read for book club on the strength of your review in TOL. )

I just ordered "Darling" & I enjoyed "Wellness"

Thank you so much. Please report back on Wellness (quite a chunky book for book club, I hope it doesn't put them off)!

I imagine she had huge fun painting this. I can almost hear her chuckling.

Me too.

Fantastic painting… Madame X’s boudoir, perhaps? I’m intrigued by the chair, dragged into place to act as a makeshift bedside table. Does that suggest that it’s not her room?

Expand full comment

YES the chair. Initially I thought maybe it had been wedged under the door knob, but then I decided I was maybe reading too much into it. But it does look makeshift, I agree. Also who brought the tray?

Expand full comment

Who brought the tray is the critical question. I sit and wait, but - nothing happens.........
