Nobody will read this because it’s two weeks late but I just had to shout that Colin From Accounts series 2 is starting on BBC-2 next Tuesday September 3rd - much earlier than on Paramount +!
I got a bit carried away and subscribed to loads of Substacks, I only pay for 2 at the moment, India’s and Louise O’Neill. I give it a few months to see if it’s worth it. I love August for a myriad of reasons, I first start making my “” lists ( I can’t say it because India would get mad.
To your mosquitoe issue, India. This is the first year I've taken a B1 supplement and the first year that I haven't been bitten by the blighters. It was a recommendation from Trinny. I started taking them at the beginning of summer, well what was supposed to be summer, so early June and I'll stop in September. Repeat annually.
I can’t believe I’ve never watched Colin from Accounts - well, I have now after an evening’s binge of 3 episodes. Just when I was thinking I’d watched all the telly! Thanks India
HOT SPOON! I am incredibly delicious and get bitten all the time. I hot spoon mine: boil the kettle, wait a few mins so it's not BOILING-boiling, pour into mug, insert spoon, when spoon is hot touch the back of it briefly to the bite. Itching gone for several hours. Just make sure the water is v hot but not actually boiling. Easy.
Okey-doke, will give Colin from Accounts a go. Fantastic suggestion/timing as always... have reached such a pitch of boredom with platforms/TV that have been rewatching Gilmore Girls - which is pathetic, since I OWN the entire box set of DVDs (the series kept me sane for the 2 years I unwillingly relocated to Glasgow with my then-partner and nobody liked me). Not YET feeling the autumnal thing, and my sweet-peas are still flowering, also borage just miraculously turned up after some weed-clearing. Little seeds must have been dormant for 2 years.
We stayed up late two nights in a row to watch the shooting stars, it was so beautiful, and we had the best night's sleep following our night sky gazing. I also feel melancholic towards the end of the summer, the flowers don't bloom as much and I try to squeeze it out of them for as long as I can - I'm constantly dead heading everything to keep them going. Mostly, I'll miss going out in my garden first thing in the morning in the warm sunshine, in my pyjamas checking out how the plants are doing. So, screw wooly jumpers and tights!
I feel like I spend the whole day deadheading and if I do it at this sort of time (7.30pm) it still needs to be done again in the morning. Shooting stars very cheering, though.
Early in the morning, walking my dog, I have also been effected by that gentle slip into Autumn. There’s a barely perceptible crisp cool edge to the air, you can smell the musty decay of the vegetation, mushrooms have appeared overnight , the blackberries are starting to go over. Trying to push away the creeping feeling of melancholy this brings me by watching the dog snacking on the blackberries & relishing in the fact here & now the sun is shining and I’m able to enjoy another extraordinary day. Reading you really helps , knowing that I’m not alone in this 🙏🏼
Oh but I LOVED Colin From Accounts! Knowing there's another series coming along is just the balm I need to soothe my many mosquito bites (what IS it with the mozzies this year? I'm bloody covered in them?) and that depressing hint of end-of-summer in the air.
Such great news about Colin 2. I was a bit apprehensive when you mentioned the dog's accident (which sounds like he did a wee - anyways, you know what I mean 🐶) but bravely bit the bullet and came out the other side with a wonderful new series to watch. Can't wait for end of September, but only because of Colin 2.
The Joie de vivre Substack sounds great but….does anyone else find it a bit frustrating that you can’t try out a Substack before having to pay for it? I know there are free posts if you don’t subscribe but I wish the first one was free so we didn’t have to wait. There are only so many £50 Substacks one can sign up to! (India’s is definitely one of the greats however! You are GOOD VALUE - as annoying men sometimes patronisingly describe women!)
Thank you for saying I'm good value (v funny and true about annoying men)! There are lots of free posts but you do usually have to scroll down a bit to find them. Agree though, might be an idea to have a free sample at the top. I often go and read the person's About page - usually gives you the gist (or not).

Yay yay and yay again 🔥

Huh, had no idea that was an option. Really useful to know, thank you so much.

Isn't it heaven? I love it so much.
🙌 Long live summer!! 🌞
✊🏼
I know exactly that feeling ! I could have started an argument in an empty room yesterday ! 🤭
I huffed and puffed all day.

!! I will try this as soon as I get bitten again. Have to water the pots so probably under 10 minutes.

That's nice about the borage. My sweetpeas are over and done. Gilmore Girls is never wrong but I know what you mean about pitch of tv boredom.

What a beautiful description, thank you. And creeping melancholy is exactly right.
Always good to hear what tickles your fancy and what doesn’t… thank you for the stimulation, much needed!
You are very welcome!

Me too, it was my favourite thing ever. You're right about the mosquitoes - they are AWFUL this year.

Colin 2 will make us all happy. Wish it was on a bit earlier - by end Sept we'll be used to the change of season.

Aaah really loved Colin from Accounts - I could not get one other person to watch it!
Spending every evening now staring at the sky willing the sun to stay up longer.
Fools! It's so wonderful. Me too re sun.
Really looking forward to Colin from accounts coming back🤗
Me too. I really hope it's as good as I think it's going to be.
